Storyline 20th Century Boys 1: Beginning of the End
In 1969, Kenji, an elementary school kid and his friends built a secret base during their summer holidays. They fantasized that they had to fight villains who were out to conquer the world and wrote them in the Book of Prophecies. Years later in 1997, Kenji becomes a convenience store manager and leads a regular life after giving up his dreams to become a rock star. His boring life is suddenly turned upside down when his old classmate dies mysteriously and an entire family in the neighbourhood disappears. At the same time, a religious cult and its mysterious leader, Friend emerges and a strange chain of events duplicating exactly the events described in the Book of Prophecies follow. Because of the expansive manga that the movie is based on, Twentieth Century Boys runs for 142 minutes and frequently jumps between the 1960’s, 1999-2000, and 2015. For some, they may find the non-linear story telling to be disconcerting, but I found the narrative style to be one of the better aspects of the film.
20th Century Boys 1: Beginning of the End It all begins in 1969 when a young boy named Kenji and his friends get together in their secret fort and write “The Book of Prophecy.” In their book, they write about a future where they fight against an evil organization trying to takeover the world and bring about doomsday.
Like the comic book, "20the Century Boys: Beginning of the End" moves backwards and forwards in time when telling the story, starting with Endo Kenji (Karasawa Toshiaki, Casshern) as a failed rockstar who now works at a convenience store with his mother and cares for his sister's infant child Kanna.

The 20th Century Boys trilogy shoves a science fiction story in your face, while actually telling a completely different story about a group of boys growing up in the 20th century. This is made plain by the title alone, but as with many Japanese works, what you see is not actually the important part.
